Constitution Hill
Constitution Hill exists as a symbol of democracy in South Africa. Created in the 1890s to house prisoners of the Anglo-Boer War, the famed institution then built Section Four, a separate unit that became home to political prisoners held captive during the Apartheid regime. Both Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela were held here, due to their positions on human rights and equality that challenged the National Party. On these same grounds where insanitary conditions tortured prisoners, in 1994 freedom was established. The Old Fort prison and the South African Constitutional Court were opened to the public as a museum at Constitution Hill 2004.
