Impala Stampede Main Street pedestrian walkway Mining District
Sculpted by Herman Wald, the work of art was commissioned by De Beers’ Harry Oppenheimer in memory of Ernest Oppenheimer in 1960. It was one of his most famous works and stood in the Sir Ernest Oppenheimer Park, close to the city center, for many years. Unfortunately during the 1990’s the sculpture was vandalized, the heads of the Impala were cut off and sold for scrap. The remaining sculpture was removed and restored by Herman’s son Michael Wald.
