The Alhambra
Plaza de los Aljibes (The Square of the Cisterns) represents one of the first architectural and engineering works carried out after the Catholic taking of Granada. Underneath is a cistern built in 1494 At first it was dedicated to training troops and as a heavy artillery settlement. In the 18th century, the Plaza de los Aljibes was used as a bullring. In the 19th century, it was adapted as a place for the “ball game.” In this place Mateo Giménez told Washington Irving the stories collected in "Tales of the Alhambra." At the beginning of the 20th century, it was used for the celebration of important cultural events.
