Besalu
Jewish Square, site of ancient synagogue, built with permission by King James I in 1244. It had several rooms - prayer room with separate area for women, on upper floor, courtyard used for religous activities and an area for community mediation, a school, In 1415, village authorities began to close the Jewish quarter. After 20 years, no Jews were left in the village. The Jews set up in the county of Besalú as from the 9th century with earliest written records dating from 1229 when King James I informed the Jews loans were forbidden.
