Pedro Agustín Pérez, better known as Periquito Pérez came from a wealthy family very loyal to Spain.is renowned in Oriente as a Mambi general and resistance fighter. However, he was in fact a vile racist from a family of bounty hunters who tracked down escaped slaves. As mayor of Guantánamo during the 1912 Massacre, Pérez was himself directly responsible for ordering the liquidation of 50 AfroCubans (mostly Haitians) in one night.He also sanctioned numerous other murders in the troubled days of 1912. Pedro A Perez' uncle, Miguel Pérez Céspedes, was a famous and well-paid slave bounty hunter around the time of the first War of Independence. In 1871, Máximo Gómez sent Guillermon Moncada to do away with Miguel Pérez Céspedes, a mission he completed successfully.
