Leirhnjukur Lava Field
The Leirhnjukur volcano, or Leirhnjúkur in Icelandic, is an active crater near Lake Myvatn and one of Northeast Iceland's impressive natural wonders. The hill rises less than 50 meters above the surrounding lava field. It is on the fault line between the Euroasian and North American tectonic plates. Steam still rises from the magma below. The last major period of activity was around 40 years when the massive lava flow pushed nearly 20 kilometers to the north.
