The square is dedicated to those who gave their lives for the freedom of the people and the independence of the country. The monument (column and columnades behind) was erected in 1896 to commemoriatethe 1000th anniversary of the Magyar conquest of the Carpathian Basin. The archangel Gabriel sits atop the column.
