Angel-Maker (1881) Baditz Otto (1849-1936) Paintings dealing with social problems were popular among the common people in the second half of the 19th century. There were institutions on the edges of large cities where unwanted babies were taken to be "looked after" without proper nourishment or healthy living conditions, and the children were soon "lost." Depictions of such a radical taboo subject were rare. The dark colors add to the horror.
