was an Austrian-Polish physician born to an Austrian father and Polish mother. He studied medicine in Lviv and Vienna. He was a pioneer in balneology, and a professor of Jagiellonian University (University of Krakow), elected as its rector in 1861. Balneotherapy is is the treatment of disease by bathing, usually practiced at spas.Balneotherapy may involve hot or cold water, massage through moving water, relaxation, or stimulation. Many mineral waters at spas are rich in particular minerals such as silica, sulfur, selenium, and radium. Medicinal clays are also widely used, which practice is known as 'fangotherapy'. Dietl described the kidney ailment known as "Dietl’s Crisis" as well as its treatment. (an attack of violent pain in the kidney region accompanied by chills, nausea, vomiting, and collapse that is caused by the formation of kinks in the ureter and is usually associated with a floating kidney.)
