Here several hundred thousand men,women, and children were murdered and their bodies burned from March 1943 - November 1944. The crematorium was also used to dispose of bodies of persons from the concentration camp who had died from other causes. On October 23, 1943, there was a revolt here by Jewish women who had come from Bergen-Belsen and who resisted being herded into the gas chambers.
