Bolungarvíkurgöng,
Tucked away on the Westfjords peninsula, in Iceland, the Djúpvegur road betweeen Isafjordur and Bogandarvik was one of the most dangerous roads in the country due to falling rocks and sudden avalanches. It was built in 1949 and caused many casualties and deaths due the rockfalls and avalanches. It was closed to vehicles in 2010 and now it’s mostly washed away. On September 25, 2010, the old road was bypassed by a 5.4km (3.36 miles) long tunnel called Bolungarvíkurgöng, built through the mountains.
