Gnomes of Wroclaw
The gnomes are all over the city, and it’s a lot of fun trying to spot them. There are hundreds of them in the city. The origin of gnomes in Wroclaw dates back to the 1980s, when they were used as the symbol of the ‘Orange Alternative’ movement which used humor and satire against Communism. As part of their peaceful protests against communism, this surrealist art community sketched gnomes where anti-Communist graffiti had been removed. The culmination point in the movement's history was the action organized on 1 June 1988, known as the "Revolution of Dwarves", during which more than 10 thousand people marched through the center of Wrocław wearing orange dwarf hats.
