Lodz map of the Jewish Ghetto
The rapid industrial expansion of Lodz in the 1800s attracted Jews starting in the 1830s. By the 1840s, Jews were 20% of the population. At the time of the German invasion, there were 230,000. The sealed off ghetto created by the Nazis was second in size in Poland after that in Warsaw.
