The square was renamed Freedom Square when Poland regained its independence in 1918 . After the annexation of Łódź by the Third Reich, the German occupation authorities of Lodz demolished the monument November 11, 1939. On November 10, 1939, the Germans spent on the Freedom Square of local Jews , whom they forced to drill in the pedestal the blast holes needed to load the dynamite. The square was renamed Freiheitsplatz and in 1940 Deutschlandplatz .The monument to Tadeusz Kosciuszko was rebuilt in identical shape in 1960 .The statue depicts Tadeusz Kosciuszko in a standing position, supported by a tree symbolizing the "Tree of Justice", in the other hand holds a rolled up document . Between his legs lies a knight's armor and a small cannon . Tadeusz Kosciuszko is recognized as the national hero of Poland, the United States of America and Belarus. He was a Polish–Lithuanian military engineer and a military leader who fought in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth's struggles against Russia and Prussia, and on the American side in the American Revolutionary War. As Supreme Commander of the Polish National Armed Forces, he led the 1794 Kościuszko Uprising.
