In 1803, the Square was named Wilhelmplatz ( Wilhelmsplatz ), in honor of Frederick William III The uprising and invasion of the French troops in 1806 made the square a new patron - Napoleon . The fall of the Duchy of Warsaw was the cause of the return to the German name. After the outbreak of the uprising in 1918, the city was captured by the Poles. In April 1919 the Polish authorities removed the German monuments from the square, and in June that year the square was given its present name. In the period just before the outbreak of the war, the square was dug through it by anti-aircraft ditches. After the entry of the German troops, the name was renamed Wilhelmsplatz and the area was reorganized. After the Second World War, the first Polish demonstration took place here on Sunday, February 25, 1945, and therefore two days after the battle for the city ended. The square, once again renamed Freedom Square, was rebuilt in the 1960s . In 2010 the Fountain of Freedom was built.
