Fwhen the days started to get shorter the common room of the farmhouse had to be lit up, the "lighting time" Oil lamps were used, first stone, then metal. The fuel was oiil, mostly cod liver oil, seal blubber, or horse tallow. The wick was cotton grass.. Metal lamps with two bowls allowed the oil that dripped to be collected and reused.
