Proper washing stations and adequate sanitary installations with wastewater treatment and wetlands are badly needed to counteract the heavy pollution of the lake which se rves as a source of drinking water . The Pilas ( washing stations ) will have a wastewater treatment plant, a wetland for final treatment of the waters before they flow back into the lake clean as well as bathrooms and toilets for use by the women and chi ldren (who typically don t have a bathroom in their home) and a playing area for the children accompanying their mothers. In San Lucas Toliman, 48 washing stations have already been built, are readily accepted by the population , and have already contribut ed to an improvement in the water quality of this area of the lake. Because of the size of San Lucas, 24 more stations are needed
