Its name, which means "Early Tamils Forum", reflects the attitude that the Arunthathiyar people are direct descendants of the earliest inhabitants of present-day Tamil Nadu, contrary to the belief that their ancestors have relatively recently migrated to the area, which they obviously understand as another means of their isolation by higher-caste people. ATP undertakes a number of activities aimed at improving the status of the Arunthathiyar.
