India Republic Day celebration, honoring January 26, 1950, the date the Indian Constitution came into effect creating a democratic government with a president rather than a monarch. Although independence from Britain was gained in 1947, India remained a constitutional monarchy. On January 26, 1930 , the India National Congress Party voted for total independence from Britain.
