The making of Veenas has been passed down through families. The industry is struggling. Young people are not so interested in learning this craft, the cost of materials is increasing while the price of the veena is not, jackfruit is less readily available, and demand is decreasing. The veena was the first musical instrument to be awarded a geographic indication (such as champagne for wine).
