Khanchipuram street scene
Shop after shop selling silk and saris.Khanchipuram silk is a specific type of silk sari and has a geographical designation by the Indian government. In 2008, 5000 families were involved in sari production with 25 silk and cotton industries and 60 dying facilities. According to Hindu mythology, Kanchi silk weavers are the descendants of Sage Markanda, the master weaver of the gods who wove tissue from lotus fiber. The saris have wide contrast borders. Traditional designs are temple borders, checks, stripes, and floral patterns. Cost varies widely according to workmanship. Khanchipuram saris are woven with heavy silk and gold cloth are worn for special occassions and festivities.
