Mahabalipuram World Heritage Site
Located on the Bay of Bengal, this site was made a UNESCO World heritage site in 1984. There are 40 sanctuaries dating from the Pallava period. The site was a seaport in the time of Periplus and Ptolemy (140 CE) and established as a town in the 7th century by the Pallava kings and was a famous harbor used for trading with SE Asians.
