Panama hats did not originate from Panama. They are Ecuadorian hats. Many Ecuadorians went to Panama to work on the Panama Canal and brought their local hats with them. When President Roosevelt wore one while inspecting the Panama Canal in 1904, it finally took off and became valuable merchandise for export in Ecuador. The hat was known as the Panama Hat since that is where President Roosevelt got it.
