Cerro Dragon
Cerro Dragon, also locally known as Cerro Iguana, is named for the large Galápagos land iguanas (Conolophus subcristatus) that live on and around it. On the northwestern part of Santa Cruz Island, Cerro Dragon has an altitude of 370 feet (113 meters). It is a parasitic volcanic cone created by a side vent from the main volcano that formed Santa Cruz Island, the dryness on this part of the island is evident in the color of the shrubs and water-conserving trees. In the foreground are Galápagos prickly pear (Opuntia echios var. echios)–locally called “tuna gigante”–a species of cactus endemic to the Galápagos Islands.
