Invasive blackberry
more than 1,500 alien species have taken to the Galápagos Islands. In the 1970s blackberries were brought to the Galápagos. The blackberry has ravaged the highlands of Santa Cruz island, covering more than 15,000 hectares. The blackberry has been able to achieve this destruction because of three main reasons. Firstly, the plant grows really fast, much faster than the native species. Secondly, blackberry plants produce an incredible amount of seeds. In fact, according to Daniel Pomposa, “In one square meter you can find over five-thousand seeds.” Birds will eat the fruit and spread the seeds even farther out. Lastly, the plant is very hard to eradicate.
