Catherine Square
CATHERINE SQUARE is situated in the centre of St. Petersburg on Nevsky Prospect. It is surrounded by the architecture ensemble of the Anichkov Palace, Alexandrinsky Theatre, and Russian National Library. The park was laid out in 1820-32 (architect K.I. Rossi, garden master Y. Fedorov), redesigned in 1873-80 (architect D.I. Grimm and botanist E.L. Regel). The park area is 160 by 80 metres. A monument to Catherine II was installed in the centre of the park (hence the name). The last reconstruction was made in the late 20th century. Extensive flower-beds are arranged among few trees.
