Dovmont fortress excavation, the external fortress
This is an outstanding archaeological monument — Dovmont fortress, which used to maintain an immense density of churches, public offices, and possibly even cemeteries. Currently only the foundations of the churches are visible.Half a century ago this place was an abandoned wasteland covered with bushes. In the 1950-60s archeologists brought the whole city to the ground. About twenty churches and civil buildings that literally stuck to each other were built on the small territory near the walls of the Krom within the period from the 12th to the 16th centuries. Later, within the period of the popular assembly to a republic, Dovmont town was considered the center of church and civil administration of Pskov and the region.
