Dupont and Demba Statue, Dakar
This statue is dedicated to the Senegalese soldiers who participated in the war and in the construction of Dakar's railway station. The statue stands just in the front of the colonial train station, built in 1885. It was the first railway station in West Africa. The monumental work executed in bronze in 1923 by French sculptor Paul Ducuing combines the African infantrymen Demba and Dupont the Hairy French. The choice of two names is dictated by the fact that they are widespread in both Africa and France. The statue commemorates the bond of brotherhood that united African and French fighters in World War I, the Great War.
