Sha'ar Hashamayim Synagogue was last fully used was in the 1960s. Today the community numbers 5 members, most of them older women. Although it is considered a Sephardic synagogue, many Ashkenazi Jews were members of the congregation and contributed to its construction and upkeep. In February 2010, a booby-trapped suitcase was hurled at the synagogue from a nearby hotel. The suitcase caught fire, but no one was hurt and no damage was reported. 2020 - Jewish synagogues in Egypt were shuttered and neglected for decades. However, the Egyptian government allocated $71 million for the restoration of Jewish sites, including synagogues in Cairo and Alexandria. The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities managed to promote the cultural heritage and the Jewish antiquities as an integral part of the Egyptian treasures.
