Sphinxes are often guards or protectors of sacred places. Some represent kings with human faces attached to a lion's body. This sphinx has no inscriptions so the Pharaoh cannot be identified. It is one of the few Egyptian monuments made from Egyptian alabaster. It was unearthed in 1912 at this exact spot.
