Hello everyone,
We left Surfers Paradise on Wednesday 28th August and headed for Brisbane! From the bus station we caught the train to Fortitude Valley where we checked into our hostel which turned out to be a really nice, chilled out place. For the rest of the day we went for an explore in the city, which like Melbourne and Sydney is very very clean and just generally nice. From the top of the hill around the corner we got an amazing view of the river, bridge and skyscrapers. On the walk down the hill we saw a huge lizard chameleon type thing sunning itself on the pavement (we'd seen a few of these already but none as big). We proceeded to take lots of pictures in amazement while everyone else walked past as if it was nothing. We continued to walk along the boardwalk on the edge of the river past lots of posh restaurants and boats, through the botanic gardens (yes another botanic gardens) and over the river to the southbank, a really nice park area by the river. Here they have an amazing giant public manmade 'beach' complete with sand and huge swimming lagoon. We commented on how it was slightly better than the paddling pool in Kidderminsters Brintons park! There is also a not so impressive version of the London Eye. Anyway, we just chilled out here for a while before heading back to the hostel. In the evening we went out for a yummy burger down in Fortitude Valley.
On the Thursday we headed out of town to the Lone Pine koala sanctuary after a coffee at the place over the road. The main attraction here was that you could go into the pen with the kangaroos and wallabies and feed them which was great fun! At one point a bush turkey managed to steal my bag of food and run off with it, very annoying for me but hilarious for Ryan! We decided they should change the name to the Lone Pine bush turkey sanctuary as there seemed to be more of those than anything else. We were particularly amazed when we saw a joey getting in and out of its mums pouch. Like at the sanctuary we visited in Melbourne we got to see lots of other native Australian animals including lots of Koalas (of course), crocodiles and snakes. We also watched a sheep dog show and a lorikeet feeding. After another very enjoyable day we headed back to the city centre and walked back up to the hostel!
The next day we had another early start and headed back to the bus station for our next trip.
Lots of love,
Jo and Ryan xxx
