Could my Ghana experience get any better? I did not think so, but it did. Ghana is amazing and we are having a great time learning about our peoples history and culture. Today we went to the Ancestral River Park and we learned about the journey that our brothers and sisters took when they were bought, washed in the slave river and made to walk to the coast towards the slave ships. We walked the trail that they did and it was awesome to feel their spirit still there on the trail and to walk in the steps of our fathers and mothers. We also saw and touched the river in which the captured slaves took their last bath before going on the long journey towards the coast. It took them approx. 2 months to get to the coast and they were chained, tortured and abused during this journey. It is said that there were 30 million of our brothers and sisters who took this journey towards the coast and only 17 million made it to the coast and even less where able to make it upon the slave ships and even less made it to the foreign countries. This was an experience that I felt in my soul. I could feel their and spirit as I walked along the path....it is good to come back home.
The picture above is showing the entrance to the Ancestral River Park and on both sides of the sign you will see slaves with broken chains, indicating that this will never happen again...we are free and will stay free.
Also in the park are pictures of other Africans and African Americans who fought for freedom and justice such as; Dr. King, Marcus Garvey, Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglas, showing that we are all brothers and sisters fighting the same fight, even though we are on different continents.
I am really amazed by the feeling of home that I have here in Ghana and I look forward to what more I will get to experience tomorrow....stay tune.
