There's nothing like a weekend in Barcelona, Spain to two mlungu travelers to get over their travel fart in Vienna. We were back on our feet, somewhat rejuvenated, but definitely energized. We weren't alone either as our friends from London, Steven and Rael, met us in Barca for their UK long weekend.
Barcelona's summer is full of life. The people, the weather, the other tourists - it's all set up for a fiesta atmosphere. The weekend we were there was during the peak tourist season and the city was packed and pumping. Whether you're there for the beach, to sight see, for culture, or to just enjoy the city, everything is done with energy. We tried to accomplish quite a lot while we were in town and managed to tick most of our boxes but the truth is that three days is just not enough for this incredible city…a week may not even be enough. That said, you won't regret any time you spend here.
As a sightseeing tourist in the city you'll walk your shoes off trying to get to it all and a hop on/hop off bus is definitely recommended. This is Gaudi's city and it's a pleasure to just check out Park Guell (with its brilliant views of the city), Sagrada Familia, his houses and building designs. Then there's the many churches, museums, streets , suburbs and don't forget Camp Nou - Barcelona's formidable football fortress - that can be enjoyed by both sightseers and those seeking some culture.
For those there to enjoy the city you can choose to chill out and burn out along the cities great warm-watered-Mediterranean coast line that's scattered with bars and restaurants. If you feel like splurging, you can head towards the harbor side where the bars get pricier and the scenery gets blinger. But don't worry, there are beautiful, tanned, dark haired people everywhere. And who doesn't love someone with a Spanish accent. While you're away from the beach, or if you not up for that sort of fun in the sun, you can just mingle around the city in restaurants, tapas cafes (the easiest way to try out a mix of the local delicacies), coffee shops , bars or just simply walking around and trying to take it all in at your own pace.
As for the nightlife, just make sure you're ready to get out and party cause the city and its bars and clubs offer a continuation of its daylight brilliance. We chose to do a mix of clubs and pub crawls (which are useful for those who don't really know their way around) and we weren't disappointed - we were just a little tired and a little hung-over…well some of our lesser trained crew at least. If you're heading out here, you can try bars around La Rambla, around the upper parts of Passeig de Gracia, back to the pricier joints by the beach or take on the infamous Razzmatazz club.
You'd think that all this non-stop running around would take it out of even the most experienced and upbeat of travelers. But one of the Spaniards best inventions is what helps you keep going - especially between the day and the night - man, we love a siesta. This is something we wish we could bring home to SA, but don't think our corporates would go for it.
