Lying in a hammock, enjoying a beer at sunset and looking out over an infinite horizon of coffee plantations- making the trip to Colombia was one of the better decisions we´ve made on our travels! Green hills converge with banana trees and coffee plantations alike and every day feels distinctly like life in a jungle paradise..
On flying into Cali, we were greeted with warm weather, salsa clubs and a suprising abundance of ladyboy working girls. Being our first contact with Colombia, we initially maintained the recommended high level of vigilance for personal safety and security. This was evident by double bolted travel bags, suspicious analysis of anyone within a 2m radius and, repelling hissing sounds directed at anyone attempting to offer us of any kind. However, we were soon to realise that Colombians are generally helpful and amiable people and one is more likely to be robbed by another traveller than a good-natured local.
Huanchita is rumoured to be the heart of Cali salsa so we hopped in a taxi with a few other travellers and headed to the action. Salsa Club 1 was buzzing with activity and I soon confirmed the theory that every Latino man and his dog is taught to salsa before they can walk. So if you ever see a latino infant walking forward 1 step and back 2, you´ll know where Im coming from..Between dances ourselves, we sat in awe and watched the dancefloor explode in a hive of energy and technique as the locals in the know competed with friendly rivalry that parallelled a "Grease dance-off".
