So I'm now back in Sydney (it's raining over here too, but the food is fantastic!) I arrived on Thursday (after travelling for 23 hours) and graduated the next morning. It was definitely a treat to wear the academic gown (my friend Kate thought that this was an occasion for Harry Potter music, though none such orchestral pieces materialised in the Great Hall - organs were the sound of the day). After the hoo-ha of graduating (which also involved photos - lots and lots of photos), my family met up with some more relatives for an after-graduation feast of Yum Cha at Marigolds, in China Town.
For those who are yet to experience the pure gastronomical wonders of Yum Cha, it really is a must to try. Seated at a table (perhaps with a 'lazy susan' installed), one does not have to wait long before a line of Cantonese-speaking waitresses wheel in all sorts of delicious Chinese morsels by your table to pick and choose. Though you may not be able to pronouce any (or all) of the delicacies, your taste buds will definitely be able to appreciate the culinary splendour. Our family has some all time favourites which we try and have every time we visit, including ha gow (steamed prawn dumplings), shu mai (steamed dim sims), spring rolls, sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves, steamed chive and scallop dumplings, and egg tarts (for dessert). Yum! Yes, graduation is a tasty affair indeed.
Having thoroughly graduated, I was then able to focus entirely on getting over my jetlag (which has taken some considerable time and effort. Sleeping is hard work!) I've been able to catch up with some school friends (I visited Lizzie and Lachlan's new place in Randwick with Georgie) as well as do some puppeting...
Today, on a dark and rainy afternoon, an eager group of puppet enthusiasts (myself included) gathered at Wesley Institute to attend an exciting workshop, "Puppetry for Film and Television". Over the next 7 weeks, we'll be making lip sync puppets and learning how to operate them on a screen monitor. Our teacher (and very talented puppeteer) is Gary Friedman, as well as Simon Greiner, who showed us how to make puppets (it was a nice surprise to see him again - we did a puppet show at uni together 3 years ago. Go figure!).
