Dear all,
its unBELIZable (national motto) here. We have had a very good time over the past days - despite of the rainy weather that we want to mention only shortly.
We entered Belize through Corozal, where we met some dieharts we received a lot of information from - about the world and god and including some information on Belize :). So based on their help we got a place to stay at at Caye Caulker, which is one of the small islads in northern Belize (can be surrounded in one hour). Laying at the "beach" - we write it like that because it was rather hard to lay on - we enjoyed the local music which is similar to Raggae (Belize feels closer to the Caribeans than to Central America), but influenced by traditional drummings....Thats how you imagine the Caribeans.
During the next days we decided to go diving at the famous Blue Hole, which is one of the ten most famous diving spots in the world. It is a cave that was once above the ground whith stalagnites and stalagtites - but today is under water (for some impressions you can google it, we do not have an underwater camera). Nowadays it is famous for the large animals you can see there. We saw about 5 sharks there, including 2 bull sharks...aaarrrgg...but they were not so interested in us. In the two other dives that were in the trip, we saw more marine life, including some more sharks that came veeeery close. When they were at about one meter distance, we got a bit worried, but they turned around. The trip included a lunch on a lonely island - Paradise?!
We have made you jeallous enough, hopefully, for you to go visit Belize. But we have done some more nice things. The last days we spend at San Ignacio, which is located at the border to the Jungle. We stay at a farm and have a nice cabin with a beautiful view over the countryside. The family has kind of adopted us, so we played cards all night long. Yesterday and today we have been doing a bike trip and a trip with a rented car to some lonely Maya sites. We saw some Aras (largest parots of Belize) on the way. At the Maya sites we were there all by ourselfes with a magnificent view over the area (see fotos)!
Tomorrow we will continue on to Guatemala and visit Tikal. There we will meet a couple we got to know on the island and may travel together with them for some days.
We hope you all have a good time at home.
All the best,
Maarten and Anna
