These are the sprits who help the children who die before they ever reach nirvana. According to myth/lore/writ (what ever you wanna call it), to reach Nirvana you must cross over a river, for children who die before their parents, it is a sort of myth, and there for they do not have the 'resorces' to cross the river. These sprits supposedly help the children to reach nirvana.
