As you enter the Cavendish estate, on your right is a village. It is beautiful. There are high gates and cattle guards, so the Chatsworth sheep don't eat their gardens, but you are welcome here.
It is called Edensor.
Once upon a magical time, a beautiful young girl far from home and an English boy who was bright with promise fell in love. Darkness was looming and war was imminent, so they married young. Billy was killed early. His body lies in Belgium. Kathleen, "Kick" was a tragic widow, bewildered with all the dreams gone too soon. She, too, died young. In a plane crash, after the war. She is buried here, in St. Peter's churchyard, with her husband's family.
The gravestone reads:
"In loving memory of Kathleen / 1920-1948 / Widow of Major The Marquess of Hartington / Killed in Action & Daughter of the Hon. Joseph Kennedy Sometime Ambassador of the United States to Great Britain.
Joy she gave. Joy she has found."
The memorial stone on the ground reads:
"In memory of / John F. Kennedy / President of the / United States of America / Who Visited This Grave / 9 June 1963"
I was glad I went. The family is up the hill from the church. Tall pines made it a cool walk.
Then I came down and crossed the street to a little tea shop next to the most perfect phone booth in the world. I had a very cold Diet Coke and called my mother and told her that I loved her.
