The alarm woke me up at 4:15 and i woke up with 11 bites on my right arm, Dan woke up itching too. I didn't sleep with the mosquito net as it didn't smell pleasant but they could be bed bug bites. We got dressed, i wore my mid length red and black floral dress for modesty and Dan wore shorts and a tshirt. We walked to reception and it was quite busy with fellow backpackers on their laptops and ipads. Our tuktuk driver pulled in and waved us on board. It was a dark journey, the streets were illuminated with the lights of other tuktuks making their way to Angkor Wat for sunrise.
It was quite a cold journey as the sun wasn't out but we passed tourists cycling topless with head lamps on so i guess i could be worse off. We pulled up to the ticket office and lined up to buy a one day pass for all the temples, this cost us $20 each. They took photos of us and printed off our tickets and we boarded the tuktuk again. We pulled up outside the entrance of Angkor Wat and it was so dark that you couldn't make out the outline of the ancient temple. We followed the crowd of people with torches as we didn't think so bring ours and walked passed a lake on either side, which could be fatal if you put a foot wrong in the dark and there are loads of frogs and other insects. We carried on walking with the crowd until we got to a lake in the front of the temple where people were setting up tripods ready to snap the perfect sunrise shot.
There were stalls offering breakfast but they were all around $5 so we decided against it. We got a good spot on the left hand side of the lake and began photographing as sunlight slowly filled the sky. There were hundreds of people determined to take a good photo lined on the bottom of the lake. Once we had taken some nice photos we headed up the steps and into the temple grounds. It was massive and there were mini temples dotted around the outside. The architecture really was amazing, you could tell how grand it would have looked in perfect condition. After walking around and going up really uneven, narrow steps we took some nice photos and we decided to head back to the tuktuk. We got a pork baguette which wasn't that nice and boarded the tuktuk and headed to the next temple; Angkor Thom.
We went through another temple with loads of faces in the buildings. There were so many i can barely remember the exact details. The last one we visited was known as the tomb raider temple. Years ago when the temple was no longer in use, in the wet season birds would fly over it dropping seeds and so after years, massive trees began growing in and around the temple. The roots were gigantic and shaped in all different patterns. I was walking through the inside when i came across an old khmer woman with a grey, shaved head who was blessing a woman. I took my seat after the woman and the woman began blessing me , she put a friendship bracelet specifically on my left wrist, where the bracelet my mum got me before i left is.
There were loads of kids selling souvenirs at the temple and we came across a particular very pretty girl who challenged me to a game of naughts and crosses and if she won i would have to buy something. She did win , it's just a shame i only had enough money left for the tuktuk. We had to dodge passed a lot of people selling souvenirs, the kids would follow us all the way out the temple bless them. After we'd seen all the temples we wanted to we got back onto the tuktuk and began to head back to our guesthouse. We were going to go to the royal bathing pool for sunset but we would have to wait around for aaaaaaages which we didn't fancy in this heat. We got back to the guesthouse and paid our driver $20, he was very friendly and talked to us a bit about each temple. When we got back to the room we were shocked to seenit was only 11:30, it shows how much you can do when you wake up at bulls*** 'o' clock! We lay on our beds looking on the internet and had a spliff then decided to head opposite us to the rooftop bar of our guesthouse. I ordered a tuna melt baguette with fries which came long after Dan's tuna baguette although it was very yummy and a huge portion! After lunch we headed back to the room for a shower and to have a nap as we were up so early.
When we woke up we decided to go to the night market again and for a bite to eat. We got a smoothie from a street stall for $1.25 which was delicious and we sat down to drink it before finding a place for dinner. We ended up in a restaurant off pub street and ordered more smoothies, Dan got a banana and orange and i got banana and coconut which tasted just like ice cream it was amazing! We both ordered a curry set menu for $4 which included fried spring rolls for starters, khmer curry and rice for mains and grilled banana with caramel and coconut milk for dessert. We also got another smoothie, i went for pineapple and coconut this time. We paid the bill and headed towards the night market.
I bought some more elephant shorts as my blue ones have holes in he crotch area. I was torn between the same design but in maroon but dan pointed out a dark brown and cream pair with a different design so i bought them for $3. We searched all the stalls for a chang sleeveless top for Dan but couldn't find one. He settled on a vans off the wall one instead. We headed back to the guesthouse to smoke, we managed to pick up off a tuktuk driver the night before. When we got back we had a bedtime smoke and hit the sack with plenty of mosquito repellent on.
