The next morning we walked along the Grand Canal and saw the bridge of Sighs, then took a ferry over to Lido - the only island with a beach as Scott was keen for a swim. Darryl was on navigation, but clearly not paying enough attention as we ended up walking up the side of the island that didn't have a beach (his excuse was that none of the streets showed up on the map).
We crossed over to the other side of the island (fortunately it's not very wide) and found a way to get down to the beach (the first part of the beach is mostly private for the hotels - and currently access to that part from the road is closed off due to it being off season).
A few minutes after we got there it clouded over and it was starting to look like rain. We wandered onto one of the rocky piers beside the sand and were walking down it when calamity struck....
April's headphone cord got caught on a stake on the pier and dragged her phone out of her pocket and into the water between the rocks - we've never seen her move so fast, she managed to retrieve it from the water pretty quickly and there only seemed to be a little bit of water inside the case, so fingers crossed it will still work. She got a few scrapes from the rocks in the process, but isn't worried about those at all.
It then started spitting lightly, but Scott was still keen for a swim so we found some shelter off the beach and he got changed and headed back down for a quick dip with Darryl watching, whilst Sarah and I stayed dry and listened to April lamenting about her phone - which she wasn't sure would work again.
After a quick dip we took a ferry back to the main island where the rain was much harder. A second ferry got us as close as possible to our accommodation and we darted between the awnings and down the narrow passages trying to avoid being skewered by eyelevel umbrellas carried by groups of Asian tourists - oblivious to the people coming the other way having to duck to avoid them.
A quick stop to purchase some items we'd spied on the day we arrived and we got back before the real thunderstorm broke - not huge amounts of rain but some spectacular thunder claps and lightening.
The storm unfortunately ruined our plans for a meal out and a gondola ride, but we'd seen plenty of gondolas during our visit so it wasn't that big a deal.
Scott: There was a massive jelly fish in the water and it almost stung me.
Sarah: The thunder storm was cool.
April: A terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day!
Darryl: I thought it was quite amusing.
