Our first real patch of bad weather coincided fortunately with our time to move from one region to the next, So for a day of driving through drizzle, rain and the odd clear patch we decided to take a scenic route through a gorge.
The weather wasn't too bad in the gorge, apparantly good enough for rock climbing as we saw five climbers partway up the sides of the gorge as we drove through one part. The gorge was stunningly beautiful with tunnels and overhanging bluffs.
Mid way through there was a great place to stop with a huge overhang, ruined stone buildings and a path down to the river.
We were lucky to be in a really clear patch of weather at the time. We stood under the edge of the overhang towering 30metres above us trying to catch a few water droplets as they dripped off the edge - shining as they caught the light on the down.
Scott spotted some fish and tried to tempt them with salami, but they weren't interested. We looked for geodes on the river bed - breaking the stones open, but not finding any.
We trundled on stopping at a pretty little village with a lovely stone bridge. It was difficult to find camping grounds open, as the camping season is over and no nearby campervan parking sites so we ended up parked at a layby for the night. Fortunately there was minimal traffic.
Next morning, the rain/intermittent drizzle continued as we made our way to a holiday park close to Pont du Gard - a multilevel roman aquiduct bridge.
The weather made it a day to just chill out, rest, try to stay dry and additionally get some washing and cleaning done between showers and try to keep the dirt out of the campervan (note to Raj - don't get a campervan it would drive you nuts, we sweep the floor multiple times a day but it's a losing battle!) Darryl and Scott went for an evening walk between the showers and saw the Pont du Gard lit up with red, white and blue lights.
The following day was fine and we booked in for a kayaking trip down the river and under the Pont du Gard arches. The river was quiet both in flow and also because we were the only ones on it. It was a lovely relaxing paddle. Some really deep parts in the river - would be fantastic swimming holes in summer but also a lot of shallow areas where some of us got beached at times. We saw quite a few decent sized fish and a couple of interesting birds. It was a neat view of the aquaduct from underneath, and a enjoyable 3 hours. We returned to our accomodation to do more washing (I think we washed everything we had over the 2 days here) and the kids made the most of the small aqua play area and sports equipment available. Scott was keen to use the outdoor fire so we lit one and heated a tin of ravioli, and then finished off the evening with some pizza and icecream at the on site cafe.
Sarah: The aquaduct was cool. The holiday park had free sports - I liked playing badminton, and playing in the water park.
Scott: I liked the fish in the river. The biggest one I saw I was about 2 feet long.
