Sydney
After our mammoth trek through the outback and then boarding a plane to Sydney, we were a little weary on our arrival in to this fantastic city! All we could manage was a quick freshen up a pizza and a quick glimpse of the Sydney Opera House before heading to bed. We were staying at the Grace Hotel right in the middle of town, near Hermes and Chanel which was nice, again mentioning that we were on our honeymoon meant that we got a room upgrade which was great and the hotel was gorgeous!
The next morning was Sunday so we wandered down to Darling Harbour for a nice Sunday brunch with the rest of Sydney's inhabitants. The city is very much focused on the harbour and they make the most of it by adorning the waterfront with numerous restaurants and bars, all very very nice and trendy! Mike was keen to see the sharks so we made a visit to Sydneys aquarium which was informative and interesting! We were told that the best way to see the city from the water was to take the ferry to Manly which is across the bay, a lovely little town that is popular at the weekends. Luckily for us we jumped on the ferry just before sunset which meant that we saw the harbour bridge, the city and the Opera house all at sunset and in a gorgeous orange glow, very pretty...... we were already loving this city! Time for 'cocktail hour' at a trendy little bar in Manly on the waters edge before heading back to the city for dinner.
We didnt realise how old Sydney was as a city and the area of 'The Rocks' is home to cobbled streets, tiny allyways and rickety old buildings which reminded us alot of Edinburgh's old town ... with street names like Argyle Street and George Street. After a wander we came across a 'cook your own steak' restaurant called The Cook House which was in a very old building. Obviously this is the kind of place Mike would like to eat and it was definately something a little different, and of course washed down with a nice bottle of red. Then a nice little pub crawl taking in all the trendy cool bars along the harbourside, luckily for us it is winter so the bars were a little quiet. We stopped off at Cruise bar where my friends Evonne and Michelle worked when they stayed here, apparently in the summer you have to queue for a seat outside here, with a view of the Sydney Opera House it is pretty amazing and we had our choice of seats! Then on to the Opera House bar with a view of the Sydney harbour bridge, very cool and with nice outside heaters so you could enjoy the view and be warm.
Day Two plan was to climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge..... a bit of a sore head from the previous boozy night but we made it!
