After arriving in El Calafate at 1:00AM after yet another epic bus journey of 18 hours and a 3 hour stop over we were treated to a free cab ride to our hostel, which was a rather nice touch we thought, so we checked in and went right to sleep.
The following morning we endeavoured to book our trip to see the Puerto Marino Glacier but as we arrived really late and tried to book really early we struggled, but after a few phone calls we managed to get onto a trip leaving at 9:00AM , being 8:50AM at the time and the bus station being 10min walk away we had to run, sweating and out of breath we arrived with seconds to spare with a disapproving tut the from the guide.
The Puerto Marino Glacier is the most amazing natural phenomenon in the Southern Hemisphere and perhaps the world! The Perto Marina Galcier. The glacier is of such monumental proportion, that it is nye on impossible to understand its sheer scale. It is 250km2 of solid Ice rising 80m from Lago Argentina (the third biggest reserve of fresh water in Argentina) and standing proud against the amazing backdrop of the snow capped Andean peaks, it truly is a sight to behold. (see all attached pictures)
We arrived back in El Calafate late afternoon and prepared for yet another early start this time a 4:00AM departure to Bariloche and some skiing!! Whooo.
