Wednesday 18 March. Today we went from tomorrow to yesterday! We crossed the International Dateline overnight and went from GMT +13 to GMT -11. We're reliving Wednesday 18 March.
Pago Pago (pronounced Pango Pango) is on the American Samoan island of Tutuila. We docked about 7:45. The weather was very hot, humid and mostly overcast. Rob and some other guys from the ship played golf, so the rest of us grabbed a bus and paid $20 each for a four hour tour. The bus had a wooden door and the air con was the windows dropped down. The seats were either wooden or had a little padding on them. I could see the road through the floor by my seat.
It wasn't so much a tour as drive along the only road to the east as far as a place called Amouli with a view over 'Aunu'u Island. Then we drove back to the West, through Pago Pago past the airport and golf course to Leone. A tsunami hit Leone in 2009 and we saw a memorial where eleven of the victims were buried.
After being dropped off by the port, Phil and Yvonne mooched off on their own and Linda, Barbara and I headed towards McDonalds (for the wifi). On the way we saw a restaurant, so Barb and I went in for lunch. We had a bottle of the local beer (good) and egg and chips (wonderful). I've been dying for a plate of egg and chips for weeks now! We then went to McDonalds, where only one person had managed to log on and grabbed Linda. We strolled back to the ship and nosed around a small market before getting back on board mid-afternoon.
I won the IQ. I then went to the back and saw the sailaway. First one I've seen since Sydney. Barbara and I didn't fancy tonight's menu, so we went upstairs to Tex-Mex night in Horizon. I had chilli con carne which was really carne sin chilli! I finished off with the well known Mexican dessert, golden syrup sponge and custard!
After watching the simultaneous broadcast of a comedy magician in Masquerade's we decamped to Champion's for the TV quiz. We won by 1/2 point. First bottle we've won in a while. Then we crowned it all by winning the tie break in the Syndicate Quiz. So another bottle for the store!
