A: Christmas Day was an R and R opportunity. It started with a number of phone calls and messages re Christmas and my birthday. All were greatly appreciated by us. As the Bezzina family is wandering the globe we had to take into account the various time zones which was fun.
The morning was relaxing and then we enjoyed a very nice baked dinner with a small piece of smoked turkey and vegetables and the Italian Christmas cake that Nives had given us- similar to Pannecotte but called Pan Bacco - with pistachios and sultanas. Yum.
Then a walk around the Vatican towards the Tiber and along it to the Trastevere area where we stopped for a Spritz in a warm bar. On the way Mick was approached twice by locals for directions which he dealt with masterfully. The first was basically where is Trastevere which he answered simply, straight ahead. The second request was from two little boys, also locals, whose mother and we assume grandmother was coming up behind them. The older woman was in a wheelchair. While Mick was talking with the younger woman and older boy, the younger one asked where were we from so I said Australia. Next question- how do you say ciao in Australia? Good day, was I think the anticipated reply!
Back home for a light tea after covering 8 km. A nice quiet day and just what we needed. Tomorrow is our last full day in this amazing city and we will spend it at the Colosseum.
