We're told this sign says something like"Attention Citizens, this is not a good side of the street during air raids" and remains from Soviet times.

Actually, the sign says: "Citizents: this side of the street is most DANGEROUS during enemy ARTILLERY FIRE" (not air raids!). The house stands on the Northern side of Nevsky avenue quite near the Winter Palace. Germans were shelling the city from Pulkovo Hights on the Southern border of Leningrad on a regular basis strictly according to a certain time schedule. So residents knew the schedule and avoided that side by the clock. (I know these facts well as I live in an appartment house right across the street. BTW we have met with Michael and Julia in Hamina, Finland :-)
