Saturday morning was taken up by re-doing some work I had lost by saving it in the wrong place on Friday. Be warned. The Outlook Temp file is genuinely temporary. By the time I found the elusive file, it was empty!
About 1 I got on the bus into town and basically took in the mind boggling array of merchandise they were flogging. It was Family Weekend - and the place was heaving with proud parents and their freshman offspring. The shops sold Penn State puzzles, and blankets, and chairs and tailgate party gear and T-shirts and sports gear and wallets and transfers and glasses and ... Check out the pictures! Picked up the bike and rode "home", parking the beast in my room.
Sunday dawned foggy - or at least I assume it did, since it was foggy about 7.30! I figured that would burn off in due course - and I was proven right if the mild sunburn I got is any evidence! It was a glorious day.
For some reason, even the bike shop was a bit vague about possible itineraries. In the end, I decided I would head for Boalsburg. According to the shop that was bout 10 miles (16km). It was nowhere near that, even with the odd side track due to the absence of signs. You can get a sense of it if you zoom in on the map in the album.
The track made its way along a creek and by a golf course then on to a cycle path along Route 322. I took it easy on my chunky tired mountain bike, and pulled in at the Pennsylvania Military Museum, where they were in the process of putting up displays of military clothing and equipment in the grounds.(Check it out).
I was too early to get into the Museum, so I pedalled on into the historic village - which I discovered was the birthplace of Memorial Day, the day on which America's military dead are remembered. (I subsequently discovered that, like Sydney;s oldest pub, there are at least three such birthplaces!)
The village itself is only a couple of streets - and on a Sunday about 11, they are very quiet streets indeed! Nothing was open and little was stirring - unless perhaps in Church! Check out the video clip.
Lunch at the only cafe in town that was opened and had a delicious BLT. On to the museum which was nothing special, but in the grounds, the display was getting into full swing, so I watched a display of military uniforms and equipment for about an hour (hence the suburn!) - check the pix.
Made the return trip to State College by a different route. I intended to sample the famous Penn State Creamery ice cream - but mid afternoon on a lovely autumn day is not the time. The queue was about 150 metres long!
Took the bike back, wandered back to town and had a cider and some nachos and went back to hotel. A very pleasant day, made all the better by the news that Beth has her drivers' licence. Yaaay!
