Hi Everyone,
Today I am feeling a little hungover after a big night out enjoying the extremely cheap beer and cocktails, so I thought it would be a good time to fill you in on my recent activity.
I eventually made it to Vang Vieng in Laos after recovering from the dodgy soup. Vang Vieng was awesome, I'm sure many of you would absolutely love it. On the first day there i went on a caving and kayaking tour which was great fun and extremely inexpensive (around $8 for the whole day including lunch)!! I met a cool guy from France and a chick from Canada, so we pretty much hung out the whole time. On the next day I did what has been labelled as a right of passage for backpackers doing SEA, tubing town the Nam Song river. Not alot of tubing was done bcause along the river bank is a number of bars. After the first 5minutes of tubing we were out of the water having a beer (at 11am) and jumping off the rather large rope swings. As you progress down the river the swings get higher which is ok because you seem to build up more courage (with all the extra alcohol). Overall I think we stopped at around 4 or 5 bars. When you arrive at each one you are given a shot of Lao Lao whisky (potent stuff), so as you can imagine I was well and truly buzzing by around 12.30pm. We finished up at around 5.30pm. Great day, everyone should do it at least once. Then spent the night at a famous TV bar watching Friends until it was 8.30pm so I could go to sleep without feeeling like a loser. Next day I headed to Vientianne.
Vientianne was cool but wont say too much about it, hired a bike, checked out the sights and hung out with the french guy. Thats about it. Then I headed to Siem Reap in Cambodia (by plane). I'm copping alot of s*** from fellow travellers because I have been flying everywhere, they are all taking buses that take forever. I hate sitting down so b***** that!!
Siem Reap was brilliant, all i haerd for days was "Halllo Lady, You want some....." funny now, not so much at the time. The temples of angkor were amazing, really enjoyed the first few but it gets a bit tiring after 6 or so hours.
I received quite a bit of extra attention from the Cambodian fellas I had a few dinner date and dancing offers which I kindly declined, but went out with a bunch of locals one night to a resturant with a swedish couple, we were the only westerners there and the menu was rather interesting. They ordered for all of us so I sampled pigs skin, pigs brain, duck foetus and cows archillies very interesting stuff..all with no gagging!!
After dinner I met a few Aussies and we headed out to 'Bar Street' for a few more drinks. At one of the bars we met this Scottish guy who talked us into going to a Cambodian nightclub with him. We went and once again were the only westerners, a truly unique, unforgettable experience. The music was not bad (didnt understand much of it, but good beats). They would play 20mins of dance tunes and then 20 minutes of slow tunes and this went on all night. The Khmer people are extremely affectionate, they were all hooked up together during the slow dances while us being Aussies headed straight to the bar!! We then moved on to another place called Angkor What!! That was also really good. I was amazed to see kids on the street at 2am begging for money and food. This one kid asked me to buy him a chicken wing (2.50US) because he was hungry, there were about 5 others around also hungry so I offered to buy french fries so they could share, straight after ordering them he walked away and went to somebody else asking for a chicken wing....the nerve. So I gave the chips to the other kids are we all stood around eating them. Another unforgettable experience. Finished up around 4am and got up at 8am the next morning to catch a bus to Phnom Penh. Have had a blast in Phnom Penh but will fill you in next time.
Think I will leave it there for today.
Hope all is well in Oz
Cheers
