Yay! I'm finally in India! After a fantactic 34 hours or so of traveling we have finally settled in at the compound, Depahalli near the city of Bangalore, India. (I have limited time on the internet so I will try to update this site as frequently as possible.) I am working with a program called REDS (raggpickers education development scheme) and this is a program run by the marianist order of priests where young children are taken off of the streets and out of the slums and are educate and taught a trade so they are able t go out into the world and actually earn money. Even though the Indian Caste System is "outlawed" it is still very much an issue in society and people now "their place." For those who are apart of the Untouchables (the lowest caste inthe system) they are born into a life they did not choose, and are usually stuck there. The people apart of the Untouchables are shunned by every other caste and not spoken to or accosiated with. (In the Hindu religion these people are reborn and reincarnated into higher castes, so they don't totally loose). Anyway, I haveta go for now because I'm getting kicked out of the computer lab!
