Yeah - on my third attempt I´ve managed to upload some photos! woo hoo.
We´ve spent this week getting our heads round the fact this is the start of a mamouth tour, Buenos Aires is big, smoggy and busy but is also very colonial and spread out over massive avenues and streets. It´s got quite an American feel to the place as it´s full of Cab´s, traffic lights and big trucks, american dinners and MacDonalds of course. But it is also nice and warm and has palm trees everywhere, so more tropical which improves it and their main food is Steak and Italian so that´s keeping us both happy.
Their Spainsh is very hard to understand and it seems to be even harder for them to try and understand our pathetic attempts at it, so we´re getting by mainly with hand signals! Luckily we start our spainsh lessons on Tuesday so hopefully that side of it will get a little easier.
We´ve seen alot of sights and from the photos you´ll see how different bits are. They are very proud of their independance and are strong Catholics so the Recoleta Cementary is an important place for them. There is still a bit of political unease as they still remember the military dicatorship of the late 70´s early 80´s so there are often protests and demonstations going on in the centre, so you stumble accross them not really knowing what is going on!
The big tourist attraction is La Boca, mainly known for its football but it´s also the first outdoor gallery in South America where they have painted all the buildings in crazy bright colours and the streets are filled with artist and tango dancers. It´s also a very poor area, so you can´t go off the 4 main roads in the middle of it called Caminto or they are likely to relieve you of your nice western belongings!
San Telmo is the other great bit we´ve seen so far, it´s the biggest market in Argentina held every Sunday and is set in the oldest part of the city and is also where their Tango music was born - which they are all very patroitic about but to be honest Chris and I haven´t really taken to it - bit slow and morbid for our liking! but we´re going to go to a Tango show at some point cause when in Rome...
Anyway hope everyone is having a good Easter and I´m now off on the hunt for a Caburys egg. xxx
